Celebrate Easter With An Italian Family Feast
Italians are known to embrace life with passion, especially when it comes to good food and company! So it’s no wonder that Easter is an occasion where they explore the delights of la cucina and go the extra mile to prepare a fanciful feast.
An Italian Feast
Easter in Italy
Easter Sunday is celebrated with a big family feast, the most copious of which are said to be in Rome. A classic menu starts with antipastos and simple offerings, such as hard-boiled eggs and stuffed pasta in minestrone. The main event is roast lamb followed by fritters of artichokes, sweetbreads and calf's brain. But that's not all––desserts are offered a plenty. Pastiera napoletana is typically served, a rich Easter pie made with ricotta cheese, eggs, cinnamon and candied fruits—basically all the good things one had to give up for Lent! Another popular dessert is colomba, a soft dove-shaped cake of orange peel and almonds. Kids can also be seen delighting in chocolate eggs with surprise centres. On Easter Mondays, picnics are de rigueur to celebrate nature's rebirth. Friends and family participate in outdoor sports and games at this time and enjoy another feast of tasty foods, including frittatas, antipasto, salad, bread and any leftovers from the evening before!
