hydrate dry mouth

Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications, recent surgery or the foods that you eat. Minor adjustments in your diet choices can help manage these symptoms.

Helpful Tips For Managing Dry Mouth

Try any of the the following suggestions which may improve how you’re feeling:

  1. Eat mainly soft foods served at room temperature
  2. Use extra margarine, butter, gravy, sauces, broths, salad dressing, yogurt and mayonnaise to moisten foods
  3. Take small bites and chew well
  4. Take a few sips of liquid after each mouthful to help swallow dry foods
  5. Dunk or soak dry foods in liquids such as tea or milk
  6. Sip on juices and other fluids throughout the day
  7. Try tea (hot or iced) or water with lemon, lemonade, sour hard candies, mints, pineapple, sherbet or chewing gum (sugarless to prevent cavities)
  8. Limit caffeine-containing products and alcoholic beverages
  9. Foods to avoid:
    • Highly seasoned, spicy or salty foods and condiments (i.e. pepper, chili, hot sauce, spicy meat sauces, soya sauce)
    • Dry, crunchy foods (i.e. potato chips, popcorn, nuts, pretzels)
