Rinse split peas and lentils; place in large pot.
Add 10 cups (2.5 L) water; bring to boil.
Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 25 minutes.
Meanwhile, place shiitakes in medium bowl; cover with 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) boiling water.
Let stand, covered, for 15 minutes or until softened.
Drain, reserving water.
Squeeze out excess moisture; cut off stems and slice. Set aside.
In large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat.
Cook onions and garlic for 5 minutes or until softened.
Stir into split peas along with carrots, celery, potato, hijiki, thyme, salt, oregano, pepper and cayenne.
Simmer, stirring often, for 20 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
Add reserved shiitake water if desired.
Stir in shiitakes.
